Malin to Mizen Head Walk
On Wednesday the 5th of October the whole school undertook a sponsored walk to and from the Swiss Cottage. The combined distance each of us walked is the equivalent of walking from Malin Head to Mizen Head. We were also lucky enough to take a brief rest in the Swiss Cottage gardens before returning home. We would like to thank every one involved for their support and particularly the boys who did great work in getting sponsorship for the walk.

Poems
Here are wonderful poems written by two fourth class boys about the fun we had when doing our sponsored walk.
Our Walk
On October the 5th it was sunny but cool.
We walked to Swiss Cottage to raise funds for our school.
Our teachers and friends walked through the trees.
We saw conkers and acorns and all coloured leaves.
Then someone said "Stop! Look over there",
And guess what we saw two squirrels and a hare!
We reached the Swiss Cottage and stayed for a while.
And, on the way back we talked with a smile.
I asked my friend Shane "did you enjoy the day?"
He said "Oh yes, I wish I could stay."
We arrived back at school and ate our food.
And ended our walk in a very happy mood.

Nature Walk
Today we had a walk in school and it was really cool.
We saw a squirrel and a bat.
Thank God we didn't see a rat.
We got some chestnusts.
We got some leaves.
They had fallen from the trees.
We walked and talked.
We had a lot of fun.
At least it wasn't raining, there was even some sun.
We got to the Swiss Cottage and had a little rest.
Then went back to school the way we came.
Today was the best.

Morning Exercise!
On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings we kick start the day with a 10 minute exercise session on the basketball court before heading into class. The Active school committee along with Ms Hanly lead the exercises and everybody follows what they do. We do exercises like squats, lunges, jumping jacks, running on the spot, stretches and lots of fun games. We get warmed up and energised before starting our days work!!

Walk on Wednesday (W.O.W)
Every Wednesday we do Walk on Wednesday (W.O.W). This is where every Wednesday we do a walk in or outside of the school. Members of the Active Flag committee measured the perimeter of the basketball court and found out that it's perimeter was 100m. Each class has a W.O.W record sheet and they keep record of the distance in km that their class has walked. They then track this on the Malin to Mizen Head W.O.W board. Which shows the different towns and villages you pass through as you walk from Malin to Mizen Head. The pictures below show 4th and 2nd class students enjoying their Walk on Wednesday together.

Dancing!
In our P.E. survey, the boys said that they did not like dancing We decided that we had to do something to change their minds and we have been livening things up learning lots of new dances across the whole school. For seachtain na gaeilge, we learned the Haka Gaelach. We also learned the Cha Cha Slide and the Macarena. The boys enjoyed partaking in these dances and we hope we have changed their mind about dancing!!

Bizzy Breaks
We have started doing our Bizzy Breaks exercises in class on wet days when the children do not get out on yard to play. Bizzy Breaks is a programme run by the Irish Heart Foundation. We do arm and leg stretches, running on the spot, exercises using our chair and much more for 10 minutes. It is very important to make sure that the children get exercise even if the weather is against us. We also do bizzy breaks as a short activity break during the day when the children need re-energising!!

Easter Hunt!!
There was a lot of 'egg'citement with our Easter themed hunt. The children got into teams, working together to decipher their easter themed clues in order to crack the code and find out where their Easter surprise was hidden. At each clue station, the children had to record a letter and a shape on their record sheet. Their were 12 clues in total and the children raced all over the school in search of the them.

National Walk to School Week
National Walk to School Week was from the 15th to 19th of May. For the week we planned a number of activities to get the children excited about walking to school more and walking more in general. On Thursday 18th of May, we did a walking bus to school. We all met in the Day Care Centre car park, put on our high -vis vests and walked to school together. We conducted a survey to find out how children travel to school daily and in particular how many walk to school (see results below). Each child also received and decorated a foot. This was made into a display that says 'These feet were made for walking. We're a walking school!'.

Active Squad!!
Each class has their own Active Mascot. The children must come up with a name for their mascot and and include their mascot in any exercise they do at school. We would also like individual children to take their class mascot home with them on a night that they are doing exercise i.e. soccer training, walking, skipping, hurling training etc. We would like the children to have a picture taken of them with the mascot as they do their exercise. We would appreciate it if this picture was printed and brought to school or emailed to us at [email protected] . It will go up on our Active Photos board in the school corridor.

Super Troopers
The children have all by now received their Super Trooper homework activity journals. Super Troopers is a programme designed by Laya Healthcare which aims to encourage children to engage in more physical activity in an effort to combat childhood obesity. The programme encourages the whole family to get involved in the activities outlined in the Homework journal and keep track of how much physical activity they have done during the week using the wall chart. Remember all children should do 60 minutes of exercise every day!

Nutri Safari talk with a Dietitian
On Monday the 27th of March, the Active Flag Committee went down to Dolan' s Super Valu to talk to Ann Griffin a dietitian. It was a good experience. She told us a lot of interesting facts. Here here are some of them. We should have 5-7 servings of fruit and veg per day, 3-5 of wholemeal cereals and breads, potatoes, pasta and rice, 3 servings of milk, yogurt and cheese, 2 servings of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans and nuts, fats, spreads and oils in very small amounts and sugar, salt and sweets not every day. Also, she told us the amount of cheese and meat we should have. If you put your two thumbs together that's how much cheese you should have and the size of the palm of your hand is how much meat you should have. It is good to know so that we get the right amount of food in our diets. As you can see, there was a lot of things to take in but it was a great experience. Thanks to Brian Dolan and Super Valu for allowing us to visit.

Thursday - Hip Hop
Henry Fitzgerald from On Your Toes Dance Academy delivered a Hip Hop workshop to each class. They learned some very cool moves and danced to catchy songs like Wave Your flag. It was a great opportunity to get the boys more interested in dance as many of them in our survey said that they don't like it. I think our Hip Hop Dance Workshop definitely changed their minds!!

Friday- Certificate Presentation and GAA
On Friday morning the whole school came together for a certificate presentation. All of the children reached their target of doing 60 minutes of exercise everyday and were presented with a certificate for this. Each teacher then picked children from their class for specific awards- The Fair Play award was given to boys who worked well in a team and showed good sportsmanship and the Active Agent Star was given to boys who motivated others to be physically active. Our final award was the GAA Star Award and was given to boys who showed great dedication and skill in GAA this year. The award was presented to the children by Martin Halpin, our GAA coach, who took the children for hurling training throughout the day. The certificate presentation was a great way to celebrate the children's achievements and end Active Week on a high note.

Active Yard
For the duration of Active Week, we encouraged the children to try out different games and equipment on the yard at lunch time . The boys are soccer mad and love to spend their lunch times playing soccer, this week was different. 1st and 2nd class used equipment such as ropes, rackets and balls, hula hoops and ball throwing score boards. 3rd to 6th class played dodge ball, rounders, tag rugby and hockey. On Friday, they were allowed to choose what activity they did at lunch time and surprisingly many of them did not choose soccer.
