County Fleadh
Boys from 5th and 6th class are busy preparing for An Oiche Drámaíochta that will take place in Cahir House Hotel on Wednesday 17th May at 7pm. The drama night is one of the events taking place during the week of the County Fleadh that is taking place in Cahir from 15th - 21st May.
The boys have been working very hard to prepare the drama 'Mo Chaisleán Álainn' , which was written by Mr O'Meara . It is an Irish language drama based on the history of Cahir Castle. Thanks to Mr. Kennedy and the boys from 5th and 6th class for preparing the fantastic backdrop.
Mile buíochas do gach paiste as ucht do phártaíochta. Táimid an-bhrodúil asaibh. Go n-eirí an t-ádh libh!!

3rd and 6th class come together every Tuesday to do paired reading. It is a great opportunity for them to practice their reading and build friendships with students outside of their own class. Now, they have the added bonus of playing with new games and board games which were kindly sponsored by the Credit Union in Cahir. We would like to say a sincere thank you to the Credit Union for their generosity.
Seachtain na Gaeilge
There was great excitement in the school for the past two weeks as we celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge. 1st and 2nd class came together to sing songs, recite poems and put on their play Na Trí Mhuc. You can see the text of the Irish drama below
An Haka Gaelach
The whole school learned the Haka Gaelach (Haka through Irish) as part of the events for Seachtain na Gaeilge. We practiced the dance together several times over the two weeks of Seachtain na Gaeilge. As you can see from the boys faces in the video, they thoroughly enjoyed learning it and it was great to get them using Irish through dance.
Seanfhocail
Take a look at some of the Seanfhocail (Irish sayings) that the boys have been learning this week.
Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin.- There is no place like home.
Tús maith leath na hoibre.- A good start is half the work.
Is fearr an tsláinte ná an táinte.- Your health is your wealth.
Ní thagann ciall roimh aois- Sense comes with age.
Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad.- Praise the young and they will prosper.

World Book Day
We celebrated World Book Day in the school with children and teachers dressing up as their favourite characters from books that they have read. There was a vast array of magnificent costumes. The children also brought in their favourite books and talked about them with their class. They summarised the story, talked about their favourite characters and read their favourite passage from the book. It was a great way to celebrate World Book Day and we encourage the children to continue to read as much as they can. As the Dr Seuss Quote says : 'The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.'

Active Flag Raising Ceremony
It 's official we are an Active School!! We are delighted to have achieved our Flag. On Friday 23rd of June, Tipperary Footballer Liam Casey came to the school to help us raise our flag. He presented our active flag committee with certificates and took part in a Kick Fada with boys from each class level. It was a great day and well done to everyone on a great years work.
Below is a poem written and read by a fourth class boy at the Flag raising ceremony.
Active Flag
Our school is like a fort for sport,
we skip, we hop, we run.
It's all about having fun.
We all worked as a team.
It was our active dream.
We raise our flag with pride,
with Liam Casey by our side.
By Ryan St.John.
Active Flag
We've worked so hard for this special day,
but we couldn't have done it without fun and play.
We've covered spike ball, hockey and tag rugby as well,
we did our bit and we did it well.
We are Cahir Boys National School and our day is today.
We've got our Active Flag, Hip Hip Hooray.

National Walk to School Week
National Walk to School Week was from the 15th to 19th of May. For the week we planned a number of activities to get the children excited about walking to school more and walking more in general. On Thursday 18th of May, we did a walking bus to school. We all met in the Day Care Centre car park, put on our high -vis vests and walked to school together. We conducted a survey to find out how children travel to school daily and in particular how many walk to school. Each child also received and decorated a foot. This was made into a display that says 'These feet are made for walking. We are a walking school!'.

Active School WeekMarching Monday!
We kick-started our Active School Week with a wonderful walk down to the Swiss Cottage. It was great to get out of the classroom, stretch our legs and get some fresh air. Each child also got their 60 minutes a day activity challenge record sheet. REMEMBER...It is very important that all children get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. It will be interesting to see if we complete this challenge!!
Tug of War Tuesday
The whole school came together on the grass to watch the Tug of War challenges 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th and 5th vs 6th. We finished with a staff vs students challenge. Many of the students had never done Tug of War and really enjoyed partaking in the sport for the first time!
Wednesday - Skipathon
On Wednesday we all took part in a Skipathon. Each child got a skipping and skipped for as long as they could. The teacher timed it and they recorded how long they skipped for!
Thursday - Hip Hop
Henry Fitzgerald from On Your Toes Dance Academy delivered a Hip Hop workshop to each class. They learned some very cool moves and danced to catchy songs like Wave Your flag. It was a great opportunity to get the boys more interested in dance as many of them in our survey said that they don't like it. We think the Hip Hop Dance Workshop definitely changed their minds!!
Friday- Certificate Presentation and GAA
On Friday morning the whole school came together for a certificate presentation. All of the children reached their target of doing 60 minutes of exercise everyday and were presented with a certificate for this. Each teacher then picked children from their class for specific awards- The Fair Play award was given to boys who worked well in a team and showed good sportsmanship and the Active Agent Star was given to boys who motivated others to be physically active. Our final award was the GAA Star Award and was given to boys who showed great dedication and skill in GAA this year. The award was presented to the children by Martin Halpin, our GAA coach, who took the children for hurling training throughout the day. The certificate presentation was a great way to celebrate the children's achievements and end Active Week on a high note.
Active Yard
For the duration of Active Week, we encouraged the children to try out different games and equipment on the yard at lunch time . The boys are soccer mad and love to spend their lunch times playing soccer, this week was different. 1st and 2nd class used equipment such as skipping ropes, rackets and balls, hula hoops and ball throwing score boards. 3rd to 6th class played dodge ball, rounders, tag rugby and hockey. On Friday, they were allowed to choose what activity they did at lunch time and surprisingly many of them did not choose soccer.
Staff vs Students Relay Race
It was all fun and games when the Active Committee took on the Staff in a relay race. It definitely came down to the wire!!

Nutri Safari talk with a Dietitian
On Monday the 27th of March, the Active Flag Committee went down to Dolan' s Super Valu to talk to Ann Griffin a dietitian. It was a good experience. She told us a lot of interesting facts. Here here are some of them. We should have 5-7 servings of fruit and veg per day, 3-5 of wholemeal cereals and breads, potatoes, pasta and rice, 3 servings of milk, yogurt and cheese, 2 servings of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans and nuts, fats, spreads and oils in very small amounts and sugar, salt and sweets not every day. Also, she told us the amount of cheese and meat we should have. If you put your two thumbs together that's how much cheese you should have and the size of the palm of your hand is how much meat you should have. It is good to know so that we get the right amount of food in our diets. As you can see, there was a lot of things to take in but it was a great experience. Thanks to Brian Dolan and Super Valu for allowing us to visit.

Another Successful Cheerios Childline Breakfast Morning!
It was another successful Cheerios Childline Breakfast Morning. The children went to their classrooms with a full belly and a smile after their bowl of cheerios. Each child donated 2 euro to Childline, a very worthy charity which offers support to children via their telephone helpline. An amazing 270 euro was raised. A special thanks to Mr Kennedy for his hard work in organising the event and to the members of the parents council who volunteered their spare time to help out with the breakfast morning. We are already looking forward to the breakfast morning next year.

Liam McCarthy Cups visits CBNS
On Friday 14th of October the Liam McCarthy cup came to visit the school. Seamus Kennedy, Cathal Barrett and John O'Keefe brought the cup into a very excited group of boys. The players spoke about the importance of playing hurling with the local clubs and continuing the great tradition of hurling in Tipperary. Johnny B also visited and sang his famous Premier Rap accompanied by James O'Brien who knew every word off by heart! It was wonderful to acknowledge the great achievement of the Tipperary team and players and we hope that they have as much success next year.
